    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Newark Park
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           , the National Trust's iconic 16th-century estate in Gloucestershire. Though the project is on hold due to shifting priorities — a common reality in heritage work — this milestone validates our specialist approach to listed building conservation, sustainable refurbishments, and tender excellence.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           As a conservation architect with experience on National Trust projects (including Tyntesfield House, Pentireglaze and Pentire Farm), winning this tender was a proud moment. In this post, I'll share the project background, key learnings, and why Newark Park remains a beacon for heritage innovation.

           Newark Park: A Tudor Legacy Calling for a New Visitor Centre
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Newark Park began as a Tudor hunting lodge built around 1550 by Sir Nicholas Poyntz, evolving into the compact manor we see today — a rare survival of Elizabethan architecture surrounded by Capability Brown-designed parkland.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The new visitor centre project aims to enhance the estate's outbuildings, creating welcoming facilities that boost visitor experience while respecting the site's Grade I-listed heritage. National Trust projects like this blend modern functionality — think accessible spaces and sustainable features — with rigorous compliance (e.g., Listed Building Consent) and low-carbon retrofits, areas where BluePrint excels.

           While paused, the Newark Park visitor centre holds huge potential: elevated facilities for events, education, and tourism, all honouring its Tudor roots. BluePrint remains ready — our experience (Newark Park aside) includes visitor centres at Pentireglaze and Heartlands—the latter is soon to be a National Trust property.

           Langdon Court is a stunning 16th-century Grade II* listed Jacobean Manor House Hotel in Wembury, South Devon.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The house has a rich history dating back to its medieval origins. Once owned by the Crown, it was later inherited by Catherine Parr after the death of King Henry VIII. In the early 20th century, Langdon Court attracted royalty, including King Edward VII, who was often a guest of the Cory Family. Langdon Court stands on 10 acres of grounds, including Grade II listed English Renaissance gardens created by the Calmady Family, who owned Langdon Court until 1875.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           It has been a wedding venue for many years - my wife and I were married here!

           The Rolling Stone article's mention of Keith Moon, The Who's legendarily wild drummer, struck a particular chord with us here at BluePrint Architectural Workshop. You see, our very own Paul Channing currently wields drumsticks with Levens Four, Plymouth's own purveyors of classic 60s-70s rock.

The wildest thing Levens Four probably does is an extended drum solo during "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" – but when you're dealing with Grade II listed buildings by day, you learn to appreciate the value of precision over chaos! &amp;#55358;&amp;#56641;

           Built in 1935, this beloved Plymouth institution has stood against nine decades of challenging maritime conditions, making its restoration both complex and crucial.

The original features—including rare teak windows, bronze windows, distinctive glass blocks, art deco features and in-situ concrete—required careful consideration in our restoration approach. Our team faced the delicate balance of preserving these historic elements while ensuring their longevity for future generations.
          &#xD;

            Careful restoration of the original glass blocks and Art Deco features, while maintaining the building's distinctive character.

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Conservation of the in-situ concrete, addressing decades of salt exposure.

The original teak windows, glass blocks, and in-situ concrete have all been meticulously restored, honouring the building's heritage while securing its future.

           A once-derelict Grade II-listed reservoir has been given a new lease on life as the Penzance Creative Cluster, now known as Pixel. This innovative project, which I had the privilege of working on during my time at Stride Treglown, showcases an exciting blend of conservation and modern design.

           The primary challenge was to create a modern facility while respecting the integrity of the Grade II listed reservoir. The footings were designed to have minimal impact on the existing structure. The reservoir needed to be stabilised without compromising its historical significance. We achieved this by infilling it with loose material and capping it with concrete, providing a solid foundation for the new structure. The new building was designed to appear to "hover" over the boundary walls.

           As we approach the opening date in January 2025, it's clear that this project represents more than just a building renovation.            In the heart of Plymouth's historic Devonport area, a piece of naval history recently faced an unexpected setback. The late 18th-century Grade II-listed gateway to South Yard, a testament to Devonport's rich maritime heritage, was accidentally toppled in a traffic incident. As conservation architects, we were given a unique opportunity to piece together this architectural puzzle and breathe new life into a cherished local landmark.

           Upon arrival at the site, we faced a scene that would sink any conservationist's heart. The once-proud gateway lay in pieces, its centuries-old stonework scattered across the ground. Our first task was to meticulously document and catalogue each fragment, ensuring that no piece of history was overlooked.

           One of the most distinctive features of Cornish architecture is the use of local materials. Authentic Delabole slate for the roof and cladding will maintain the cottage's traditional appearance while improving its weather resistance.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Windows and Doors
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Replacing the windows and doors presented a unique challenge. We designed bespoke solutions honouring original designs while incorporating modern energy-efficient technologies.

BluePrint had the privilege of working with the University of Plymouth to secure listed building consent for an innovative water source heat pump at Drake's Reservoir.

           The project presented a unique challenge: how to dramatically reduce energy demand for the adjacent Nancy Astor sports centre while respecting Drake's Reservoir's historical significance. The solution? A state-of-the-art water-to-water heat pump system that harnesses the reservoir's thermal energy without compromising its integrity.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           The system recovers heat energy from the reservoir water, using it as a sustainable energy source for domestic hot water in the Nancy Astor Building. Crucially, this process neither extracts water from nor adds water to the reservoir, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

           The results speak for themselves. Engineers are projecting CO2 savings of approximately 80% for 'like-for-like' hot water consumption. This significant reduction aligns perfectly with the University's commitment to sustainability, having already reduced its tCO2e emissions from gas and electricity by an impressive 81% since 1990.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           One of the primary hurdles we faced was designing a system that would have minimal impact on the listed structure. The solution? An optimised design that is completely reversible, ensuring that the impact on Drake's Reservoir's historical significance remains very low.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h5&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Technical Details
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The system stores the heated water in two conventional insulated hot water cylinders, allowing for peak demand management and optimised energy collection during low-demand periods. This clever design ensures efficient use of the heat pump system throughout the day.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           As we approach the end of another year, it's time to pause and reflect on the incredible journey we've experienced. The past 12 months have been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with challenging projects, rewarding outcomes, and a pace that has left us breathless but fulfilled.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Our commitment to preserving local architectural heritage has kept us so engrossed that we've barely had a moment to share our experiences with you. It's been over two years since our last project update and an astonishing 21 months since we penned our last journal entry. This radio silence wasn't intentional – it's simply a testament to the demanding nature of our work and the trust our clients have placed in us.

           We have been appointed as part of a multidisciplinary team to help develop proposals for various sites within the National Marine Park, Plymouth, Devon. The ultimate aim of the project is to reimagine and rework heritage spaces, including the Tinside Lido, associated buildings and beach area and to increase access and inclusive enjoyment of the waterfront so that it becomes an integrated, largely self-sustaining (financially and environmentally), health and well-being hub, worthy of its iconic status and location, of value to the whole City and its surrounds, and appropriately reflecting its role as a key gateway with respect of the National Marine Park. 
          &#xD;

           We have been appointed as part of a multidisciplinary team to help develop proposals for various sites within the National Marine Park, Plymouth, Devon. The Mount Edgcumbe Country Park is a Grade I Listed Registered Park and Garden. It is home to numerous heritage assets and is aligned with the work of The Box and other heritage partners. It connects people to their maritime and marine history and natural assets and offers multiple access points to the National Marine Park.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           With thought and care, historic buildings such as the Garden Battery can usually be made accessible to all members of the community without compromising their character and quality. A creative and flexible approach is advocated for this project to help find an appropriate solution for the creative reuse of this prominent historic building.
          &#xD;

           Radford Castle has been derelict for 50 years. We achieved planning and listed building consent and recently cleared the conditions, which means construction can begin! We are talking to builders, and it shouldn’t be long before the long-anticipated build can start on-site. When completed, Radford Castle will be an AirBnB-type romantic getaway for two.            In May 2022 Paul became a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation. The IHBC is the UK’s key professional body for conservation specialists from all skills and disciplines. A ‘broader church’ than the AABC - which is specifically for architects - members typically comprise archivists, archaeologists, engineers, town planners and conservation officers. Achieving full accreditation requires members to demonstrate a deep understanding beyond their profession.
