Hartley Park Gardens: Where Modern Living meets Thoughtful Design

Transforming a Plymouth home into an extraordinary living experience through innovative extension and landscape design.

When Vision Meets Passion: A Plymouth Transformation

At BluePrint Architectural Workshop, we believe that the most extraordinary homes are born from the marriage of bold vision and genuine passion. Our latest project at Hartley Park Gardens in Plymouth perfectly embodies this philosophy—a comprehensive extension and refurbishment that has transformed not just a house, but an entire way of living.

This isn't just another home improvement project. It's the result of working with clients who shared our enthusiasm for creating something truly special—homeowners who understood that great design isn't just about aesthetics, but about crafting spaces that enhance every moment of daily life.

Redefining Open-Plan Living

The heart of this transformation lies in our complete reimagining of the home's layout. By reordering the existing plans, we've created an exciting open-plan living experience that flows seamlessly from space to space, each area purposefully designed yet beautifully connected.

Interior Spaces That Tell a Story

Every room in this home has been thoughtfully crafted with a specific purpose and personality:

The Heart of the Home pulses with life as the kitchen flows into a light-filled glazed extension—a welcoming hub where conversation, laughter, and daily rituals naturally gather and connect. This isn't just where meals are prepared; it's where memories are made.

The Smart Lounge  represents the future of relaxation—a retreat where an entertainment wall and intuitive smart home controls create seamless comfort, letting you unwind or entertain at the touch of a button.

As evening approaches, the Evening Hearth reveals its magic. Traditional bi-fold doors open to reveal a double-sided hearth—a glowing centrepiece to be savoured indoors, outdoors, or both, drawing friends and family together around the warmth of the fire.

Practical living hasn't been forgotten. The Mudroom & Dog Den is a testament to real-life design—a practical vestibule where muddy boots, wagging tails, and outdoor gear all find their place, keeping the rest of the home serene and organised.

The Play Lounge strikes the perfect balance—a playful yet sophisticated haven where children's imagination and adult relaxation coexist, blending fun and style for all ages.

For those who work from home, the Office Studio offers a serene workspace with inspiring views over Dartmoor to the east, where creativity and focus come naturally.

Even storage becomes elegant with the Pantry & Utility Combo—a cleverly designed space that maximises every inch, complete with a discreet laundry chute and sorting bins that streamline daily routines between floors.

Landscape Design: Extending Living Beyond Four Walls

But this transformation doesn't stop at the threshold. We've designed a comprehensive landscape that creates distinct outdoor rooms, each with its own character and purpose:

The Arrival Court, Carport & Dog Shower provides a thoughtful welcome—easy arrivals, sheltered parking, and a dedicated space for muddy adventures.

The Sensory Garden awakens every sense with fragrant herbs, textured leaves, vibrant blooms, gentle water sounds, and edible delights—inviting you to pause, touch, and breathe deeply in nature's embrace.

Our Pollinator Patch buzzes with life, supporting bees, butterflies, and the essential work of pollinators through wildflowers and native blooms.

The Garden Lounge dissolves the boundaries between inside and out, as bi-fold doors spill open-plan living onto a lush, comfortable terrace—perfect for relaxing amongst greenery.

For culinary enthusiasts, the Kitchen Terrace serves as an outdoor culinary stage, complete with integrated BBQ, cooking station, and dining area—where meals and memories are made under open skies.

The Flame Court creates a gathering place for crisp evenings, where family and friends can encircle the fire pit, sharing warmth, stories, and starlit moments.

Our Design Philosophy in Action

At BluePrint, we believe that exceptional architecture emerges from listening to the building, to the site, and to the unique story each project tells. While we love bold contemporary design, we understand that every setting demands its own response. We don't impose a house style; instead, we let the distinctive character of each building, site, and setting guide our creative process.

For Hartley Park Gardens, the domestic setting called for a traditional design approach that would feel both timeless and fitting. Our extensions have been carefully crafted to be sympathetic and complementary to the host building, creating a harmonious dialogue between old and new. This thoughtful restraint reflects our belief that traditional design styles possess an enduring quality—they don't just follow trends, they create homes that will be cherished for generations to come.

This approach ensures that while we're adding contemporary functionality and modern living spaces, the overall design feels like a natural evolution of the original home rather than an imposed addition.

🏊‍♂️🚗 When heritage meets horsepower! The Rolling Stone article's mention of Keith Moon, The Who's legendarily wild drummer, struck a particular chord with us here at BluePrint Architectural Workshop. You see, our very own Paul Channing currently wields drumsticks with Levens Four, Plymouth's own purveyors of classic 60s-70s rock.

The Market Hall in Newton Abbot stands as a testament to the town's vibrant commercial heritage. As specialists in listed buildings and heritage properties, BluePrint Architectural Workshop is proud to be part of this significant restoration project, working alongside Teignbridge District Council, LHC Architects, and AECOM. The Challenge: Balancing History with Modern Needs Historic market halls present unique challenges. Years of ad hoc modifications, varying maintenance approaches, and the natural wear of time had left their mark on this 19th-century landmark. Our initial dilapidation surveys revealed several critical issues: Inappropriate modern alterations that compromised the building's historical integrity. Structural concerns requiring specialist attention. Complex compliance requirements for modern safety standards. The need to maintain the building's commercial viability while preserving its heritage. Our Approach: Expertise in Action Drawing upon our 99% success rate with listed building consent applications, we developed a comprehensive strategy that addressed both preservation and practical needs: 1. Detailed Documentation: Our thorough dilapidation surveys mapped every historical feature requiring attention, creating a precise blueprint for restoration. 2. Strategic Planning: We crafted detailed repair information that satisfied both conservation requirements and modern building standards. 3. Consent Navigation: Our expertise in heritage projects proved invaluable in securing the necessary planning and listed building consents, ensuring all stakeholders' requirements were met. The Solution: Restoring Authenticity Our restoration plan focuses on: Removing unsympathetic modern alterations. Reinstating original architectural features. Implementing repairs that respect traditional building methods. Ensuring the building meets contemporary requirements while maintaining its historic character. Progress Update Construction has commenced, marking an exciting phase in the Market Hall's journey. As we progress, we uncover and document historical features hidden for generations, adding to our understanding of this important building's heritage. Looking Forward This project exemplifies our commitment to preserving Devon's architectural heritage while ensuring these buildings remain viable for future generations. We'll be sharing regular updates on social media as this exciting project progresses, documenting each step of returning this cherished landmark to its former glory while preparing it for its next chapter.

A remarkable transformation has taken place in the heart of Penzance. A once-derelict Grade II-listed reservoir has been given a new lease on life as the Penzance Creative Cluster, now known as Pixel. This innovative project, which I had the privilege of working on during my time at Stride Treglown, showcases an exciting blend of conservation and modern design.

A Monumental Challenge In the heart of Plymouth's historic Devonport area, a piece of naval history recently faced an unexpected setback. The late 18th-century Grade II-listed gateway to South Yard, a testament to Devonport's rich maritime heritage, was accidentally toppled in a traffic incident. As conservation architects, we were given a unique opportunity to piece together this architectural puzzle and breathe new life into a cherished local landmark.
