'The Box' Wins Art Fund Museum of the Year

We are pleased to see The Box in Plymouth recognised as Art Fund Museum of the Year, one of the UK’s most prestigious cultural awards. This national recognition reflects the strength of the vision behind the project and its success in creating a cultural destination of regional and national significance.
Bringing together museum, gallery, and archive functions, The Box has become a defining civic asset for Plymouth—linking the city’s heritage with a contemporary cultural offer.
Early Foundations of a Landmark Project
The origins of The Box date back many years before its completion. Before founding BluePrint Architectural Workshop, Paul Channing was the project architect during the early development of the scheme while working at Stride Treglown.
Over an intensive 18-month period, the project formed a full-time focus, shaping the strategic direction of what would become one of Plymouth’s most significant cultural investments. This included a comprehensive appraisal of nine potential sites across the city, each assessed in terms of heritage context, accessibility, urban integration, and capacity to support a major cultural institution.
The selection of the Tavistock Place/ Drake Circus site emerged as a key strategic decision—positioning The Box at the intersection of the city’s historic core and its contemporary civic and commercial centre.
Supporting the Funding Strategy
A critical stage in the project’s progression was securing support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. As project architect, Paul developed the early design proposals and the heritage-led narrative that underpinned the funding application. This work helped secure Round 1 Heritage Lottery Funding, enabling the project to move forward into subsequent stages of development.
A Lasting Contribution to Plymouth
The Box now stands as a major cultural landmark in the South West, reinforcing Plymouth’s identity and supporting ongoing regeneration within the city centre.
Its success highlights the importance of:
- Robust early-stage analysis and site selection.
- Clear and compelling heritage narratives.
- Integrated thinking across architecture, collections, and public engagement.
Reflecting BluePrint’s Approach
While BluePrint Architectural Workshop was not involved in the project's later delivery, our ethos reflects the same principles demonstrated during its early development—careful analysis, an understanding of heritage, and a long-term view of place.
The recognition of The Box as Museum of the Year is a significant achievement for Plymouth, and a reminder of the value of sustained, dedicated input at the earliest stages of a project’s life.
